Injuries occurring in the workplace are still a significant problem, according to a sector authority.
Judith Hackitt, chair of the Health and Safety Executive, is warning that injuries at work must still be reduced and controlled, despite a fall in the number of occupational fatalities in the UK.
"There is still a major challenge we all face to prevent death, injury and ill health in all of our workplaces. There is no magic wand in health and safety," she explains.
Ms Hackitt adds that employers should show leadership in ensuring employee protection and in tackling the risks that they face.
The expert's comments come after recent figures released by the organisation revealed that there were 180 workplace deaths in the UK last year, which illustrates the need for employers liability insurance.
She adds that this "statistical snapshot" needs to be analysed carefully to ensure that underlying factors can be understood and the impact of the recession taken into account.
