The dangers of carrying out gas work have been highlighted after two landlords and a gas service engineer were fined a total of £19,000 for risking the lives of a mother and her six-year-old daughter.
Robert and David Watts, both of Southampton, pleaded guilty to Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and were fined £7,000 each with total costs of £9,000.
Southampton Magistrates Court heard how Motoko Riley and her daughter Emily were severely affected by carbon monoxide, after the landlords failed to act on warnings that a boiler needed servicing.
David MacDonald, also of Southampton, was the property's gas engineer, and he declared the boiler safe to use three times when it was not.
He pleaded guilty to four counts of breaching the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and was fined £5,000 with costs of £548.
Earlier this month, the Health and Safety Executive launched a campaign to encourage employees to 'do their bit' in the south-east of England to improve risk management at work.
