Public liability insurance holders should ensure they are employing fully registered gas fitters, after a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Jamie Loxston, an unregistered, self-employed gas installer from Herefordshire, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Regulation 3(3) of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1988. He was fined a total of £1,250 and ordered to pay £550 in costs.
Hereford Magistrates Court heard how between May 2004 and May 2008, Mr Loxston was working at a caravan site at Brierley, used as accommodation for migrant workers.
He was contracted to install a number of appliances and conduct safety inspections, however, in July 2009, an investigation by Corgi engineers found numerous defects in their fitting and operation.
It emerged that Mr Loxston was not Corgi registered at the time, and he was served with a prohibition notice.
The HSE added that anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must now be Gas Safe registered.
