The dangers of workplace transport have been highlighted after a worker suffered a broken leg when he was hit by a forklift truck.

Pirelli Tyres pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £9,000 with costs of £4,282.

North Cumbria Magistrates Court heard that Allan Miller, 62, was walking through an area in the firm's Carlisle factory when he was struck from behind by a pallet being carried on a forklift truck.

Pirelli was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for failing to properly manage the risks to pedestrians in the area.

Michael Griffiths, the investigating HSE inspector, said: "Site operators should provide contractors with appropriate health and safety information, so that they can do their work safely."

Earlier this month, public liability insurance holders were told about Elliott Loohire, which was ordered to pay £7,000 after a worker was struck by a reversing forklift truck at its Stevenage depot.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19895631-ADNFCR
