More of an effort should be made to help keep workers safe in 2010, public liability insurance holders have been told.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said that, last year, more than 250 work related incidents occurred across the West Midlands every week, with more than 13,000 people being killed or injured during 2009.
Furthermore, 119 West Midlands firms were prosecuted for breaching health and safety legislation, with action also being taken against hundreds more in the shape of prohibition and improvement notices.
Rosi Edwards, HSE regional director for the West Midlands, said: "Behind these statistics are the real life stories of hundreds and thousands of people and families dealing with real hardship, pain and suffering."
Earlier this month, Ian Griffiths, 41, of Theodore Close, Oldbury, pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations after one of his workers fell 26 feet through a roof onto a concrete floor, breaking several bones.
