Public liability insurance holders have been warned about the dangers of working at height following the prosecution of a cladding firm.

Llanelli-based Ammex was fined £10,000 with costs of £6,750 after it pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Those present in Llanelli Magistrates Court heard how Stephen Armstrong-Ether was re-cladding a retail outlet roof at Parc Troste when he fell almost four metres through an unprotected skylight onto a mezzanine floor below.

He suffered serious injuries including fractures to his ribs and back, as well as nerve damage to his leg and also memory and hearing loss.

Anne Marie Orrells, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector, said: "Openings such as skylights in roofs must have suitable protection around them to prevent workers from falling into them."

Last year, the HSE urged businesses to take proper work at height precautions after a worker fell nearly four metres through a roof in Skipton.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19698480-ADNFCR
