The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted a London-based property company and the contractor it employed after a worker fell through a roof and injured his back.
Perryman Properties of Craven Park Road pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 4(1)(a) and 9(1)(a) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 and was fined £7,000 with nearly £4,500 in costs.
It employed Demetrius Michael to carry out construction work, but failed to manage the project properly or check he was competent.
Mr Michael of Enfield pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety Act 1974 and was fined £6,000 with costs of £4,430.13.
London Magistrates Court heard how Mr Michael subcontracted some of the work to Ahmet Ergun, a self-employed builder. However, on May 19th 2008, unskilled labourer Aydin Acay, who was working with Mr Ergun, fell through the roof and suffered two fractured vertebrae.
Recently, the HSE re-launched a campaign to warn firms of the dangers and devastation to families that slips, trips and falls can cause.
