The British Safety Council (BSC) has spoken out to say that simple advice must be given to small companies about health and safety law, otherwise it could be burdensome to them, employers liability insurance holders have been told.

Neal Stone, director of policy and research at the BSC, said: "If we get it right in terms of the expert, simple and proportionate advice, particularly for small businesses, when it comes to complying with health and safety law, it will help get rid of the perception that it is just a burden weighing business down."

He added that companies will find that their business is boosted if they manage health and safety effectively and make sure that their workforce is properly protected, employers liability insurance holders were told.

Mr Stone made his comments in the wake of the Department for Work and Pensions claim that health and safety regulation should start to zoom in on high hazard sites rather than trapping UK companies in red tape.
