Every single death caused by slips, trips and falls is entirely preventable, according to an industry expert.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said that public liability insurance holders need to carry out proper risk assessments and then apply control measures as highlighted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Speaking about the recent launch of a new phase of the HSE's Shattered Lives campaign, which aims to advise firms on how they can cut out slips, trips and falls in the workplace, Mr Barber said that it would appreciated by his members.

"Unions will warmly welcome this practical hard-hitting campaign and will be raising the issue with employers wherever and whenever they can," he added.

Stephen Williams, regional director for HSE in London, also commented that making improvements to construction sites or places of work does not need to cost the earth.
