A number of celebrities have backed a government campaign to test smoke alarms on a weekly basis, with public liability insurance holders being urged to do the same.
Broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan, boxer Amir Khan and Coronation Street actresses Helen Flanagan and Brooke Vincent are backing the Fire Kills campaign with a 'Push it Pledge', to urge people to test their alarm each week.
Chef Ainsley Harriet, actress Jill Halfpenny and comedian Dave Spikey are also getting behind the campaign, with research showing that while 85 per cent of people own a smoke alarm, only a third test them every week.
Helen Flanagan, who plays the role of Rosie Webster, said: "It's scary how quickly a house fire can spread and in so many cases, it's the smoke alarm that can make the difference between someone being able to escape in time, or not. We will be testing our smoke alarms every week from now on."
Public liability insurance have also been told that just two or three breaths of toxic smoke can knock someone unconscious, highlighting the need for a working smoke alarm.
