Health and safety inspectors will help to raise awareness among public liability insurance customers in Sunderland of the dangers of asbestos and workplace transport.

Inspectors from Sunderland City Council will join forces with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in a bid to improve standards on the city's industrial sites.

Checks will be carried out over three weeks starting on November 2nd to find out how public liability insurance customers are promoting health and safety through active leadership.

Jonathan Wills, HSE inspector, said that asbestos-related diseases are the single greatest cause of employer deaths in the UK and those that are responsible for the maintenance of premises have a legal duty to manage the dangerous material.

Principal environmental health officer at Sunderland City Council Keith Anderson added: "We will be looking to ensure that companies are taking the necessary steps to identify and minimise the risks to help ensure a safer workplace for all."

Public liability insurance customers will be able to learn more about the dangers of asbestos when the HSE launches a national £1.2 million campaign in November.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19435714-ADNFCR
