Health and safety standards of public liability insurance holders have not slipped during the recession, according to an industry body.

Latest research from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) showed that 85 per cent of senior level construction professionals do not believe that their standards have deteriorated.

Of the 1,260 respondents, 36 per cent also said that their company had increased spending on health and safety in the past 12 months, compared to 13 per cent who said that it had gone the other way.

Furthermore, 69 per cent of replies said that health and safety is being taken very seriously in their organisation.

Michael Brown, CIOB deputy chief executive, said that there are some encouraging signs within the research that show that health and safety is being approached and resourced correctly.

Commenting on the Health and Safety Executive's research which showed that the number of work-related injuries and deaths had fallen between 2008/09 compared with 2007/08, Mr Brown said that the industry will not rest until it can say that every worker will return home safely at the end of a day.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19477771-ADNFCR
