The dangers of loading workplace transport have been highlighted after a haulage company was prosecuted, public liability insurance holders have been told.

Joda Freight Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £5,000.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Nicholas Holmes, 49, from Bradford was delivering panel saws to the Saw Centre in Glasgow when one fell off the lorry and hit him on the head.

The incident, which occurred in August 2007, has left him with permanent brain damage.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that Joda Freight, did not have a reliable system of communication in place to make sure their drivers were informed about the securing and stability of loads.

According to the HSE, more than 1,200 people were injured when loading or unloading vehicles in the UK last year, with millions of pounds also being lost in damaged goods.ADNFCR-2022-ID-800040730-ADNFCR
