Joiners liability insurance holders have been given a warning about working with dangerous machinery after the prosecution of a hammer manufacturer.

Thor Hammer Company, based in Solihull, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined £2,500 with costs of £2,594.

Solihull Magistrates Court heard how Aaron Watts was operating an unguarded pedestal drill when the glove on his right hand became entangled in one of the rotating spindles of the machine.

He suffered injuries to the back of his hand and a deep laceration to his palm, requiring him to be off work for a month.

Clive Neil, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector, said: "This offence is all the more serious because the company had received previous advice from HSE about the need to guard its drilling machines."

Earlier this month, businesses on industrial sites around Hartlepool were subjected to inspections, with the HSE looking to crackdown on safety measures such as unguarded machines.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19665393-ADNFCR
