A London firm has been fined following an incident in which a worker's finger was amputated.
TC Industries of Europe, of Holborn Viaduct, was ordered to pay £5,00 with £1,357 in costs as a result of the accident, which occurred at the company's Saltburn plant in May last year.
An employee was operating a pick and place transfer unit to move some pallets and lent his hand on the unguarded carriageway momentarily, but the drive wheels ran over it and severed a digit, illustrating the need for joiners liability insurance.
Dave Shallow, an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive, said the incident highlights the need to put proper guards in place to protect staff.
"What makes this case all the more serious is the fact that the company had previously been advised of the need to provide a guard for the machinery," he explained.
Ayrshire firm Belcher Food Products, from Prestwick, was recently fined £30,000 after employee Steven Glass lost three fingers in a machinery accident, illustrating the need for employers liability insurance.
