The public have been warned about the dangers of asbestos following a fire at a New Forest sports club, public liability insurance holders have been told.

Members of the Milford Tennis and Squash Club have urged people to stay clear of the area because of fears over the building's safety, the Bournemouth Echo reported.

Linda Nicol, honorary club secretary, said that asbestos had been found in the roofing of the facility.

"We have put up signs telling people to go away, in the nicest possible way," she added.

Around 20 firefighters from New Milton and Lymington were called to tackle the blaze at around 17.30pm on Boxing Day.

The fire is a major blow to the club's members, as the facility underwent a refurbishment only two years ago, costing £142,000.

Earlier this month, joiners liability insurance holders were warned about carrying out proper risk assessments for the presence of asbestos.

Waxport of London pleaded guilty to breaches of asbestos regulations and was fined £1,000, with costs of nearly £9,000, after advising a company that asbestos was no longer present in an office facility at Merthyr Tydfil when it still was.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19531479-ADNFCR
