Electricians liability insurance holders have been warned about making sure their employees are properly registered after the prosecution of a firm.

Jim Price, from Beckenham, Kent, who trades as Jim the Joiner, was fined £250, made to pay £250 in costs and a further £1,150 in compensation to the homeowner for breaching regulation 3(3) of the Gas Safety Regulations 1998.

Magistrates at Bury St Edmunds heard how Mr Price was working in the town two years ago when he removed an old boiler from a house and installed a new one.

He was not registered to do so and the new boiler was also fitted incorrectly, with the homeowner then forced to pay for an engineer to rectify the work.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Andrew Saunders said those employing someone to carry out work on a gas installation should first make sure the person is fully registered with the Gas Safe Register.

Earlier this year, Peter Tongue, a gas fitter from Brecon, was jailed for three years after he was found guilty of two charges of manslaughter.

Margaret Powell of Brecon and Thomas Morgan of Port Talbot died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a central heating unit that Mr Tongue had worked on in December 2006.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19482578-ADNFCR
