Electricians liability insurance holders have been warned about the dangers of working at height after a worker suffered serious injuries when he fell from a ladder.

Philip Parcell, 53, from Newby, broke his back in three places, his skull in two places and also suffered nerve damage to his face after falling between the decks of the Our Julia boat in Scarborough harbour in 2009.

Our Julia Ltd, of Main Street, Cayton, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 8(e) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and was fined £7,000 with costs of £2,028.

Scarborough Magistrates Court heard how Our Julia failed to provide a suitable ladder for Mr Parcell to climb between the decks.

Paul Newton, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector, said: "Too many lives are shattered as a result of falls from height at work, and I hope today’s prosecution serves to remind all employers that proper precautions must be taken at all times."

Recent figures from the HSE showed that around 4,000 suffer major injuries as a result of a fall each year.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19769259-ADNFCR
