A fire station in Wales will undergo a £500,000 rebuild caused by asbestos in one of its buildings, public liability insurance holders have been told.

WalesOnline reported that five stations in the borough of Blaenau Gwent face renovation work after investigations revealed that they were housing quantities of the cancer-related material.

According to the news provider, the situation at Blaina station is so severe that the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is committing to a six-figure refurbishment.

"Because asbestos has been used in the main fabric of the building it is impractical to carry out reinstatement works," the FOI statement said.

"The decision has therefore been taken to rebuild the station at a cost of £500,000. This is scheduled for February 2011."

Potential dangers of asbestos were recently highlighted by The Scotsman, which reported that a revamp of the Royal Commonwealth Pool is being put back 13 weeks because of signs of the material in the 1960s building.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19803202-ADNFCR
