People in the workplace have grown increasingly complacent over the threat of swine flu, public liability insurance holders have been told.

Despite government figures showing that the number of new cases of the virus are falling, public liability insurance holders have been told that care and precautions still need to be taken.

Rachael Heenan, from Beachcroft LLP, said that if risks cannot be adequately managed then, ultimately, workers can be suspended with pay on health and safety grounds.

"Employers need to be aware that, as long as people are still contracting swine flu, there is every chance that they will be running on empty with a seriously depleted workforce at some point in the near future," she added.

Latest data shows that, for the week ending January 17th 2010, the rate of GP consultations for flu-like symptoms in England was 12.1 per 100,000 population.

NHS.co.uk said that, currently, the death toll in the UK from swine flu stands at 360.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19577423-ADNFCR
