Support and advice will be available to sufferers of asbestos-related diseases in Cumbria and the north-east of England after a new organisation was launched.
The North-West Evening Mail reported that the Northern Asbestos Support and Campaign Group will provide medical and legal support.
It comes four years after Barrow launched its own advice and support group for sufferers and relatives of people who have been affected by asbestos.
The northern group will also provide a drop-in centre located in the north-east, a telephone helpline and advice on entitlements, support for family members and home visits.
Michael Blench, chair of the group, said: "As a former shipyard worker I have known many workmates die from asbestos diseases like mesothelioma. Many more have suffered from conditions such as pleural thickening and pleural plaques."
The move comes after more than £250,000 was paid out to asbestos-related disease sufferers in the east of England.
