A housing developer has been prosecuted following an incident which left a worker paralysed from the chest down, builders liability insurance holders have been told.
Strata Homes, of Quay Point, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 8 of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined £30,000 with costs of £16,062.
The court was told how Anton Burrows, 24, was working as part of a bricklaying team which was sub-contracted to Strata at its Suede Development construction site in Huddersfield when he was crushed by a steel beam weighing more than 660 pounds.
Mr Burrows was left with extensive injuries, including spinal damage, resulting in him being left quadriplegic.
Alasdair Green, Health and Safety Executive inspector, said: "Had the lifting operation been properly planned and supervised, in line with the regulations, the Approved Code of Practice and HSE's guidance, this devastating incident which could have very easily killed someone, would have been avoided."
Recently, Joda Freight was prosecuted when a falling panel saw left a worker with brain damage.
