The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged employers liability insurance customers to fully train staff who use machinery at work.

It follows the prosecution of Delico at Aylesbury Crown Court after a worker was fatally injured while cleaning out a machine at one of its sites in Milton Keynes.

Delico, based in Hull, was fined £200,452 after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

HSE inspector Karl Howes said that employers liability insurance customers must make sure that they implement safe systems of work for staff using machinery, including ensuring that all safety features such as guards are not overridden.

He added: "All areas of risk need to be assessed, including cleaning and maintenance tasks, to make sure that tragic incidents like this do not happen."

The warning comes after another company, Schulman Inc, Crumlin, was fined over £20,000 after a worker lost part of three fingers as he was attempting to clean a machine on the company's site.ADNFCR-2022-ID-19382935-ADNFCR
