A Hampshire company has been fined following an incident in which a worker was killed by a skip loader.
John Stacey and Sons, from Tadley, has been ordered to pay a £60,000 fine with £29,061 in costs at Winchester Crown Court as a result of the accident, which occurred in June 2007.
Worker Frederick Aubrey was sorting waste at the firm's site while another employee was tipping a skip loader, but the driver did not see Mr Aubrey and reversed over him, causing fatal injuries.
David Bibby, an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive, said the incident could have been avoided if the risks had been adequately assessed, which illustrates the need for employers liability insurance.
"This should serve as a message to all companies and especially those in the waste industry where unfortunately accidents like this are all too common," he explained.
Huddersfield man Gerald Parker was fined a total of £500 and ordered to pay costs of £958 after three men, including himself, were injured in a vehicle accident, which highlights the importance of liability insurance.
