A Haringey-based building firm has been prosecuted after a worker's hand was injured in a machine.
Maplestead Limited, of Orchard Gate, Ealing, was prosecuted for breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It was given a fine of £1,000 with costs of £2,000.
City of London Magistrates' Court heard that Rondeo Schoeman, 32, from Tottenham, was machining a wooden handrail using a spindle moulder when the blades caught part of the corner piece and pulled his hand towards the cutter tools.
He suffered severe damage to his left hand and spent a month in hospital after the accident.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that poor planning did not highlight specific hazards for making curved pieces on the moulder.
Jack Wilby, HSE inspector, said: "It is the responsibility of all companies to make sure that this work is properly planned and that adequate supervision and training is provided."
Last month, Formica, based in Newcastle, was prosecuted after a worker's hand was badly injured when it was drawn between two rotating rollers.
