An asbestos awareness day is set to take place next month to highlight the affect that the material has on people's lives.
The North-West Evening Mail reported that Barrow Asbestos Related Disease Support will take part in the global Action Mesothelioma Day on July 2nd.
Taking place between 10:00 and 16:00BST at The Forum, Duke Street, members from legal teams, trade unions and other organisations will be present to offer advice.
A wreath-laying ceremony at Barrow Town Hall with the town's mayor Councillor Rory McClure will also take place.
Last year, figures from the Health and Safety Executive showed that 197 people in Barrow have died from asbestos-related diseases since 1981.
Bob Pointer, secretary of the Barrow Trades' Council, said: "Mesothelioma is such a cruel disease and people who are diagnosed often came into contact with asbestos many years ago and didn't realise it posed a threat."
This year's Action Mesothelioma Day is focusing on DIY in the home and aims to raise awareness of disturbing asbestos-containing materials.
