Understanding RIDDOR reporting procedures

For most businesses, a reportable accident, dangerous occurrence, or case of disease is a comparatively rare event. However, if it does happen, you need to let us know.

The regulations about reporting are called The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 but you'll often see this abbreviated to RIDDOR.

You have a legal duty to report accidents and ill health at work. The information you supply helps HSE and local authorities to identify where and how risks arise, and to investigate serious accidents. We can then help you and provide advice on how to reduce injury and ill health in your workplace.

Reportable incidents include:

  • work-related deaths
  • major injuries
  • over-three-day injuries
  • work related diseases
  • dangerous occurrences (near-miss accidents).

How to report

By phone: The easiest way to is to call the Incident Contact Centre (ICC) on 0845 300 99 23 (free from BT landlines). They will send you a copy of the information they record and you can correct any errors or omissions.
