Contractors Liability Insurance
General contractors liability insurance is a must for any contractor. Claims arising for property damage and personal injury as a result of a contractors’ negligence are always a risk, and without liability insurance, UK contractors leave themselves wide open to substantial claims that could seriously impact on the profitability of their business.
Although you can bid for work without having contractors liability insurance, UK law stipulates that if you are found responsible for injury or damage to property whilst carrying out a contract, you will be liable for any compensation claim. So general contractors need to be covered by adequate insurance in the form of contractors liability insurance, which may include public liability insurance and possibly employers liability insurance. UK contractors need to be aware of their legal obligation to provide financial compensation to any employee who sustains injury or disease as a result of their employers negligence during and in the course of their employment.
Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage that could occur during the course of work. However, if you have subcontractors working with you, it is your duty as the overall contractor to ensure that they also have self employed insurance, in the form of public liability insurance and/or employers liability insurance. It is strongly recommended that you check the insurance documents of all subcontractors to ensure that public liability insurance and/or employers liability insurance is in place. Having these systems of checking in place would influence your ability to obtain insurance at competitive prices both now and in the future.
